In 2014 haben wir im Kampf für bessere Privatsphäre im Internet enorme Fortschritte gemacht, die ohne die wertvollen Unterstützungen unserer deutsch-sprachigen Benutzer in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz – die zusammen unsere zweitgrösste Nutzerschaft –, nicht möglich gewesen wären. Daher möchten wir uns in unserem ersten deutschen Blogeintrag herzlich bei Euch bedanken.
2014 neigt sich dem Ende zu und so möchten wir uns Zeit nehmen, um über die Ereignisse im abgelaufenen Jahr zu sinnieren und einen Blick auf die Zukunft von Proton Mail zu werfen. Vor etwas über einem Jahr fingen wir – eine Gruppe junger Forscher am europäischen Zentrum für Kernforschung CERN(new window) – an, an dem Proton Mail-Projekt zu arbeiten. Wir waren durch unsere gemeinsame Sehnsucht nach demjenigen Internet, das unsere Privatsphäre respektiert, gebunden. Es war kaum vorstellbar, dass unsere Vision von so vielen von Euch auf der ganzen Welt geteilt wird. Die größte Anerkennung für einen Wissenschaftler ist zu wissen, dass seine eigene Arbeit akzeptiert wird und einen Beitrag dazu leistet, unsere Welt eine bessere zu machen. Wir sind dankbar für Eure Unterstützung.
Heute ist aus einer in dem Cafeteria des Kernforschungszentrums entwickelten Software ein voll- funktionierender Email-Dienst, der hundert-tausenden Nutzern eine bessere Online-Privatsphäre anbietet. Diese Verwandlung ist nur durch Euch, unsere lieben Benutzer, realisierbar gewesen, durch eure Spendensumme von mehr als 500’000 Schweizer Franken – einen Rekord in Software-Technologie-Crowdfunding(new window). Mit dieser unentbehrlichen Unterstützung war unser Team imstande, vollzeit an dem Projekt zu arbeiten, um die nötige Infrastruktur(new window) für die Datensicherung aufzubauen.
2014 war eine aufregende Reise für uns, mit sowohl spannenden als auch anstrengenden Mo- menten. Allein in den letzten ein paar Monaten wurden mehrere Features freigegeben und wir wollen in 2015 die Entwicklung noch schneller vorantreiben. In unserer Prioritätenliste stehen derzeit Mobile Application für iOS und Android, “Custom Domains” und “Folders in Inbox” ganz oben. Die Speicherkapazität für kostenlose Konten wurde auf 500 MB erhöht, doch mit zunehmendem Ausbau unserer Infrastruktur hoffen wir, die Kapazität auf 1 GB aufstocken zu können. Bereits in der Entwicklung sind nun auch andere “geheime” Features, die wir hoffentlich in den nächsten Monaten freigeben können.

Das Wichtigste von Proton Mail stellt unsere Nutzergemeinschaft dar, die unsere Vision teilt, positive Änderungen bewirkt und die Rückkehr von Online-Privatsphäre möglich macht. Unsere Nutzergemeinschaft entwickelt sich rasant, bleibt jedoch eng verbunden und wir sind dankbar dafür, im vergangenen Jahr so viele neue Freunde gewonnen zu haben. The Proton Mail team would like to wish all of our users and supporters a happy New Year. 2014 has been a year of incredible progress in our fight for privacy, and it wouldn’t have been possible without you.
As 2014 draws to a close, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the past year and what the future holds for Proton Mail. Just a year ago, we were a group of scientists at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research(new window)) working on the Proton Mail project, drawn together by our desire for an internet that respects privacy rights. Little did we know that so many of you from all around the world also share our vision. For any scientists, the greatest reward is knowing that your work is valued and making the world a better place, and we are grateful to have the support of so many people.
Today, Proton Mail has been transformed from software developed in the cafeteria of a nuclear research laboratory to a fully functional email service providing privacy to hundreds of thousands of people around the world. This is possible because you made it possible, through over 500’000 CHF of donations during our crowdfunding campaign(new window), which set a new record for software technology crowdfunding. This critical support allowed our team to work full time and build up the infrastructure(new window) required to safeguard data privacy.
2014 has been an incredible journey for us, with many exciting moments, and even some stressful moments. In the past few months alone, we have added over a dozen features to improve Proton Mail and in 2015, we intend to even further increase the speed of development. High on our list of priorities is mobile applications for iOS and Android, and also support for custom domains and folders in the inbox. We recently increased the storage size to 500MB for free accounts, but as we continue to scale our architecture, we hope to be able to further increase this to 1GB. We also have a number of secret features we will be rolling out over the next couple months!
