ProtonMail Beta Update

Since ProtonMail beta was launched 3 days ago, we have been met with a overwhelming response from around the world. In fact, the response was a little too overwhelming as we have completely maxed out our server capacity. As a result, we are sad to announce that we need to temporarily close the beta signups.

When we launched ProtonMail, we did not anticipate that there would be so much interest in our service. We thought we had enough resources in place to support over 1 month of user signups. Never could we have imagined that we would hit that limit in around 60 hours.

Over the next couple days, we will work on expanding our server capacity, and further improving our security. Since our launch, we have had several offers to help us with a full security audit and as those results come in, we will also be taking steps to further improve the security of ProtonMail.

Because of the overwhelming demand for ProtonMail, we are also looking for additional developers to help us build ProtonMail. If you are a developer or security expert who would like to work with us on ProtonMail, we invite you to email us at

To our current beta users, we thank you very much for taking the time to try out ProtonMail and giving us your suggestions. We also appreciate your bug reports so you should also keep those coming! As we are still in beta, bugs will inevitably come up, but we promise to continue improving ProtonMail and that is not possible without your help and support.

And to the millions of people out there who want a higher level of privacy in their communications, you can sign up to ProtonMail.

As we expand capacity, we will begin inviting people off the waiting list, we thank you for your patience!

  • You aren’t using a scalable hosting solution to serve your beta/soft launch? Hopefully you don’t bottleneck again; ProtonMail looks awesome! Can’t wait to give it a spin.

    • We own and control our own servers so we can provide hardware security to users. As a result, scaling isn’t as easy as clicking one button. We did NOT expect to have this much demand right from the start, especially while the service was still in beta!

      • You know, whats is secure or what promises to be and the users want to test, this will always happen.

  • i definately want an email account with you. Please let me know when
its ready. Get snowden to help you, hahaha it would be such a payback.

  • There are many established email providers in Switzerland. What makes you different? How much storage space will a “free” account consist of? What will you charge for the Premium service?

  • Thanks for the beta invite. Your concept seems awesome and exactly what I am looking for. I am not so tech savvy so I just ask: Is ProtonMail a webmail interface only (since the encryption happens in the browser) or is there gonna be a mail client version?

  • I understand the situation—-but could proton at least give a ETA from the time of reserving a inquiry? thanks dj

  • Congratulations.
Want to know about the investment opportunity in this venture.
    Please let me know.

  • I help people fighting against corruption. Could prove to be extremely helpful for me. Waiting..

  • PhotonMail is doing what no one else has ever truly succeeded at, and no government or company wants them to succeed at. I am an IT professional, and I know how difficult it is to secure privacy. I have signed up and I can’t wait to help out the beta and provide all of the feedback that I am able to.

Thank you, Gentlemen, for doing what is right, providing true privacy to the individual. If only everyone else had the integrity and ethic you do.

  • Finally, an email service without the intrusion. Please let me know when your service is online as soon as possible.

      • Yes, when we get some income through paid accounts, we will go for a more mainstream domain now, but for now, we are proudly Swiss with our .ch domain name.

        • What? Change from .CH are you nuts? Keep CH dropping it will be aasdive marketing mistake. One guy feels strange and finds protonmail difficult to temember! Do you want him as a client?

          • This. Screw him, if he is not able to research were a domain is located and why you are located in Switzerland, this service might not be the right fit

  • can’t wait to get an email account. Thanks for doing business the way it should be done.

  • Don’t you have any updates to post? How’s it goin’? Can we send you some money?

  • It is very encouraging and long overdue for such an email service. Most of us are not criminals, we pay our taxes, follow the law, and support our govts, but being spied on, having our privacy eroded to such a degree, is not what we vote for. ” Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.”
    Thomas Jefferson

  • A fella posted on the blog inquiring as to how long is your backlog is. Could you give us an idea as to how long a wait those of us who have reserved are looking at ? This information will help your readers who are pondering weather or not to signup just yet. Thanks and I hope this venture becomes all you hope it will. PeAcE

    • We expect to be able to onboard everybody on the waitlist today within 4-6 weeks. However, the waitlist is growing daily so the people that sign up later may have to wait longer.

      • Thank you admin, even if its news we don’t like, at least we know and can respect that. PeAcE

      • I signed up (and supposedly reserved a Protonmail username) the day the news release came out. I keep seeing news about all the funding and the new servers and the faster development…but I’m still waiting for that invitation. Is it ever going to happen?

  • Hi Guys….

we are Austrian Cannabis Activists and we would need a Account because this is the Best Solution for us we ever seen on the Web.

    Great Work

    • Don’t give up your secret !
Anyway, looking forward to finally have privacy on the internet.

  • How about storage capacity, email attachment size, emails per inbox and all this other vital type of information when you choose an email provider?
Will there be free, premium, pro plans?

    • Yes, there will be free, and also premium plans offering more storage. Right now, storage on free accounts is limited since we are in beta but we will also increase the free account storage as well once we have more capacity.

  • You guys should setup temporary forwarding for new beta applicants to the applicant’s current email address during the interim while you work to increase your capacity. This would permit the applicant to publish the email addy immediately.

  • Can you give us an indication on when new accounts will be available?
Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!

    • We are now sending out ProtonMail invites on a rolling basis, there are more going out every day as we increase our server capacity.

    • It should already work through the safari browser on the ipad, but we are working right now on improving the UI. An ipad version is also in the works later on.

  • Hi guys ur doing a great job……..our Indians bribed the bank authorities in france and germany to get the details of INDIAN politicians bank details where huge amount of black money is being rotated in SWISS…… about that……………its easy to hack someone but proton mail has not revealed about the end to end encryption mechanism in its systems…………………so kindly do that!

    • Thank you for your support! ProtonMail is based off of the openPGP framework. We will be open sourcing all of our software in the future so you can have complete access to the how ProtonMail works.

  • Finally, great! Private email. This is good. Please let us know when paid accounts are available. As a side note, who thought it would be a luxury to have privacy. I’m one of those who thinks privacy is a basic right, but in the sad state of affairs we live in it is considered a luxury. As Ben Franklin once said people who are willing to give up a little bit of privacy for a little bit of security deserve neither! I think you guys should network with John chen…Blackberries server side of things would help greatly in this effort…
