How to add more information to a contact? (multiple emails, phone #, address, notes, ect.)

Unfortunately at this time we only support one email per name in your contacts. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We are planning on adding more fields to the contacts in the page.

Please up-vote this article if you would like to see this soon (and write which fields you would like to see in the contacts)!

Would like to see fields for
3 to 5 email addresses per contact,
    full address,
phone / fax / mobile numbers,
    website,
a field for additional custom comments.
    – Or to make it short, basically, the fields that outlook/ yahoo, etc.provides.
    Thanks a lot!

  10. Flo

Please implement more fields to the addressbook.
    (more emails, phone numbers…)
This is one of the reasons I still have to use my old email service…

  11. Tycho

As the most urgent fields I would suggest:

    – Multiple Emails, For more clarity
    – Phone numbers, 3 types Work Mobile and landline/home
    – Links to [social] media, They don’t have to be intergrated but I want to know where to find them.

    And to a lesser degree:

    – Divisions between parts of the name, Title First name Middle Name Last Name
    – For the visual aspect a photo, Could be considerd too much of a drain on the storage but helps a lot for the overview and usability.

PS: U can’t vote on this article but it does have more than 3000 views.

I vote for this as a priority. My current primary contact list is in Google/Gmail, and when I import it, I lose a lot of info due to multiple emails for a given name being normalized out (apparently only one email per user name is permitted in PM).

  13. George

    Multiple emails pls

Personally, I only need three fields: Name, Email Address, and a generous Notes field where I could add all the rest. You could set your import function to place the first two items in their proper places in Contacts, then put everything else in Notes.

I understand this isn’t ideal, and isn’t industry practice, but it would suffice for many of us.

Looking forward to an expanded Contacts in the future. Thanks for all you do.

  16. Dan

I’m with David on this one. One of the things I like about ProtonMail is the simple and easy-to-use GUI. While there are some additional features I would like to see added, I think there is such a thing as “feature overload”, which can make the user experience somewhat overwhelming. A “notes” field for optional info (phone number, address, etc) would suit me just fine.

Please create the ability to link the password required for guest email recipients to their contact information so it doesn’t have to be remembered and typed in each time an encrypted message is sent

Using iCloud to share contacts between my iDevices, I hope one day I can have all these information available in my Proton’s contacts, including a picture.

it’ll be nice to be able to create group / distribution list:
1 name = list of addresses to send the email to

  27. anma

Informations like company names, a department and maybe the position inside the company specified are very valuable to me. I would really appreciate if there would be an option to set a (maybe alternative) display name like in MS Outlook also.

Standard fields, phone (home, cell, work, etc.), address, email address, and then a free form field to store additional info that you guys don’t want to write specific fields for, such as IM handles, etc.

  32. net user

Although i can receive with multiple names using name+xxxx@protonmail.com, I can not specify the +xxxx when sending.

  33. ProtonMail Support

The aliases are for sending messages to the recipients. This cannot be used as a sender address.

Hi the usual contact information is needed, as most people have mentioned already… phone number, company info, multiple emails, physical addresses etc. For sure at least a phone number! otherwise we need to keep contacts in our old unsecure system hich defeats the purpose of this!

  60. ProtonMail Support

    Hi John,
We have implemented filters for this purpose: https://protonmail.com/support/knowledge-base/filters/.
This feature will be available for all of our users in the near future.

  61. tridy

If one cannot sync it with the phone or computer address book, then why would one keep the phone numbers and addresses in proton? How would you use it? Can the phone look the name from Proton’s address book, match it and show the name who is calling? Why would you duplicate the info in the phone and proton? Or am I missing something?

Multiple email addresses – yes please, specifying type as well – home, work, etc.
    Notes – yes please.

As many have said the prioroities must be,
    Alternative emails addresses,
    Phone numbers,
    General notes

But CalDav support would be great. I understand the issue of feature creep, but a secure address book seems like an essential component of a private communication system. Is there a seperate secure contacts system that could integrate with proton mail?

I want to keep all of my contacts, with all of their information and my own additional notes etc. secure. Is this a future feature possibility?

I will make the switch to protonmail and pay for a plus account when the adressbook is improved. The most important is to implement a simple text notes!
    Name – already there
    Email – already there
Notes – Simple text notes. ASAP. Please implement!

Then you can do the more fancy stuff.

Can you provide option to put contacts in alphabetical order and be searchable. My contacts are in a random order and if you have more than 150 contacts (as opposed to 20 for free users) then finding a contact is a headache.

  74. ProtonMail Support

The contacts are showing into alphabetical order on our web app. You can also use the search button into the contacts tab to search through the contacts. Can you please contact us at contact@protonmail.com?

how was this not included in the initial release of PM? Every single web email service I’ve ever used always had an address book with all the fields I needed. (Address.. phone number, etc)

It would be very nice to have a secured ungoogled place to store contacts informations, such as phone tel, adress, birthday etc.
And I guess not really hard to implement 😉

  90. Denizen

This feature as-is is a huge no for me. ProtonMail should require an authorization from the user’s concerned contact before any of their information can be entered by the user.

It’s a massive privacy killer: Encouraging our friends and acquaintances to betray our privacy wishes by giving highly personal information to companies like Google and Facebook (or even ProtonMail). Look how eager all of the users above are to do this.

Please think of a way to prevent leakage if you implement this. The ideal would be to refuse the data until the contact clicks a link within an automated email or something. If that can’t be done, please warn the ProtonMail user that his contact may not appreciate him adding personal information without consent, and warn the contact that the ProtonMail user entered personal information when he does.

We’re on ProtonMail here, people are supposed to care about privacy. It’s not Gmail guys.
