Autosave contact list (What is this?)

Auto-save Contact List automatically saves all email addresses that you have sent a message to through your ProtonMail account. These email addresses are automatically added to your Contacts with a default Name of their email address. Auto-save Contact List is enabled by default. You can disable this feature in the Settings page of your account. (see update contacts for more information on how to edit the contact information).

The contact list comes with a couple of sample contacts that seem to be related to Proton Mail’s contacts. I accidentally sent an email to contact@protonmail,ch because I use the contact list to start emails and that “contact: was right next to the one I wanted it to go to. I didn’t notice my mistake until I sent it. So who got it? Is it possible to rescind it?

Hello Jess, sorry for the inconvenience. Unfortunately there is no way to “rescind” messages. contact@protonmail.ch is a general email used to contact us, we will delete the message on our end.

Possibly, autosaved contacts should be kept separated from the others.

I just noticed (Protonmail 2.0.20) that my contacts list was being populated with addresses of other people listed as recipients of email that I have received. I have not sent mail to these people using ‘reply all’ or otherwise. This is either a bug, or an annoying feature that isn’t explained in the above description at all. I suppose it may be useful to someone, but there should be an option to disable it without disabling ‘autosave contacts’ as it is described above. I sent a bug report.

Is the contact list stored encrypted with our mailbox password?
If not, could you be forced to hand over a list of contacts by a court order?

Just downloaded the app to iPhone 6 Plus. Imported contacts and an exorbitant amount of contacts were imported…some that I have not seen or used in ages. I have but 41 contacts selected on my phone but ProtonMail copied every single contact ony my phone! I attempted to delete them 1 by 1 but get a pop up telling me that it must be done on my phone and not on your contact list. Is there a way to just delete my entire contact list on this app and just begin building a contact list from scratch? If not I don’t think I will be using PM. Thanks.

You can’t delete or edit contacts that are stored on the phone. You can revoke the access to the Phonebook in the iPhone settings.

His two questions were asked but not answered. Can you please answer.

At this moment the contacts are not encrypted with your mailbox password. We are looking into doing this in the future, but we don’t have an estimated time. Regarding the second question, the information can be given, but it needs to come from a court order, from a Swiss court, as it is stated in the Privacy Policy.

Is it possible to create distribution lists, that is, a group of contacts for sending the same e-mail to all of them?
I have looked for it in the free account and also in the others but I have not found anything.

Unfortunately, we do not support groups at this moment. This is planned for the future.
