Automatically save contacts

ProtonMail automatically saves all email addresses that you have sent a message to using your ProtonMail account. These email addresses are added to your ProtonContacts along with the default Display Name associated with that email address.

The Automatically save contacts feature is enabled by default. To disable this feature (or re-enable it if previously disabled):

1. In the ProtonMail web app, click the App Selector icon and select ProtonContacts.

proton contacts
2. Go to SettingsProtonContactsGeneral Contacts. Then toggle the Automatically save contacts switch.

The contact list comes with a couple of sample contacts that seem to be related to Proton Mail’s contacts. I accidentally sent an email to contact@protonmail,ch because I use the contact list to start emails and that “contact: was right next to the one I wanted it to go to. I didn’t notice my mistake until I sent it. So who got it? Is it possible to rescind it?

  2. ProtonMail Support

Hello Jess, sorry for the inconvenience. Unfortunately there is no way to “rescind” messages. contact@protonmail.ch is a general email used to contact us, we will delete the message on our end.

Possibly, autosaved contacts should be kept separated from the others.

I just noticed (Protonmail 2.0.20) that my contacts list was being populated with addresses of other people listed as recipients of email that I have received. I have not sent mail to these people using ‘reply all’ or otherwise. This is either a bug, or an annoying feature that isn’t explained in the above description at all. I suppose it may be useful to someone, but there should be an option to disable it without disabling ‘autosave contacts’ as it is described above. I sent a bug report.

Is the contact list stored encrypted with our mailbox password?
If not, could you be forced to hand over a list of contacts by a court order?

Just downloaded the app to iPhone 6 Plus. Imported contacts and an exorbitant amount of contacts were imported…some that I have not seen or used in ages. I have but 41 contacts selected on my phone but ProtonMail copied every single contact ony my phone! I attempted to delete them 1 by 1 but get a pop up telling me that it must be done on my phone and not on your contact list. Is there a way to just delete my entire contact list on this app and just begin building a contact list from scratch? If not I don’t think I will be using PM. Thanks.

You can’t delete or edit contacts that are stored on the phone. You can revoke the access to the Phonebook in the iPhone settings.

His two questions were asked but not answered. Can you please answer.

At this moment the contacts are not encrypted with your mailbox password. We are looking into doing this in the future, but we don’t have an estimated time. Regarding the second question, the information can be given, but it needs to come from a court order, from a Swiss court, as it is stated in the Privacy Policy.

Is it possible to create distribution lists, that is, a group of contacts for sending the same e-mail to all of them?
I have looked for it in the free account and also in the others but I have not found anything.

  11. ProtonMail Support

Unfortunately, we do not support groups at this moment. This is planned for the future.

I see from 2016 the question was asked regarding the ability to create distribution lists for contacts and that the reply was it was planned for the future….is this now possible or are we still a way away from that future? Thanks

  13. ProtonMail Support

Contact groups are not available yet, but you can select multiple contacts and then compose a message automatically addressed to all selected contacts. Other improvements to more easily add recipient addresses to the composer are coming in the future as well.

I can’t delete the autosaved contacts. When I open Contacts menu I see a list of email addresses that I have sent email to in the past, but after a second the screen closes and it says that I have no contacts… But they are in there somewhere! How can I delete all email addresses from the contact list?

If you are still experiencing this issue, please contact our support team at contact@protonmail.ch, via the report bug button or using the support form at https://protonmail.com/support-form.

    Hello

I want to add more information to my saved contacts list like names of people for example. Most people don’t place their names in email their email address rather you add that information on their saved details. How do I add more information to an automatically saved proton mail address?

  17. ProtonMail Support

To edit your contacts, click on the Contacts button in the top navigation bar. Please note that only premium users can edit the extra fields (like street address, phone number, etc.)

  18. FrancoNero

Contacts are now encrypted just like the emails, right?

  19. ProtonMail Support

    Yes, Contacts are also encrypted.

    Hi,

Is there a sync option for contacts to Thunderbird Address book?

The manual cvf export is a bit teadious. Would bridge would have to sync these if so?

  21. ProtonMail Support

Unfortunately, no. You will have to manually import contacts to Thunderbird. If you’re having trouble with the built-in contact manager in Thunderbird, you can try using the CardBook extension for Thunderbird.

I want to know where I can find BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) for sending bulk emails without the addresses being visible to people receiving them?

  23. ProtonMail Support

Click on the little down arrow at the end of the To field in the web client, or the + symbol in the To field in the mobile apps.

My Visionary account states I have 6 users and 50 email addresses. How does a user differ from one of the 50 email addresses?

I can declare a user as PRIVATE, meaning I as admin of the account can’t view the PRIVATE USER account emails.I have two secretaries that track my emails. Does that mean that my address can not be setup as PRIVATE?

Does a PRIVATE USER have a PRIVATE CONTACT list, or is the Contact list gathering contacts from all users registered on the Visionary Account?

  29. ProtonMail Support

    • User=Mailbox. Each mailbox can have multiple addresses added.
    • The primary account (the one with the ProtonMail address) can only be private. All other sub-users can be set as non-private. Sharing access is currently only possible by sharing the login credentials.
    • Each user has a separate contact list.

hi there. it seems to be not possible to manually add a new email address from the inbox into the address book. would be just one click, though. could you consider adding that to the next update?

  33. ProtonMail Support

Add to contacts should be there in the dropdown menu on the From address. If you’re using the V4 beta, it’s missing there, but it is available on the main V3 version.

Mailing lists pose problems wrt to contacts: once one has sent a message via the list, it gets added to the list of contacts (a nice feature, I believe), and then all messages from that list seem to be sent from that list and do not print the original sender…

  35. ProtonMail Support

Hi! In cases like this, we’d recommend that you disable the autosave of contacts.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
