Display Name (aliases)

Premium ProtonMail accounts have the ability to create multiple aliases under one account. Every email address you create has it’s own Display name. You can change the display name by following this steps:

  1. Go to Account within Settings
  2. Under the Default Identity, you will find a link Other IdentitiesChange address identity on ProtonMail
  3. The link will lead you to the Addresses menu
  4. You will see the list of your enabled and disabled aliases
  5. Click on the Edit Identity link
    Edit Identity on ProtonMail active address
  6. For adding different Display Name than your Default, use the Custom button and press ConfirmCustom Display name on ProtonMail address

    You can change the display name in Settings>Account or in Settings>Addresses>Edit Identity.

    Hi,

    Am trying out Proton Mail free plan.

    Am interested in Visionary Plan with a Custom domain, but am confused between Aliases and Mailboxes.

    When you mentioned 50 Addresses, do you mean 50 Aliases or 50 unique Mailboxes?

    I would like to have multiple unique mailboxes for Senior Employees of our Organisation under one Visionary Plan. Is this possible? Please explain.

    The 50 addresses are either for @protonmail aliases or custom domain addresses. You will not have different login credentials for these addresses. We are working on adding this feature in the future.

    ProtonMail does currently not honor this setting in outgoing emails. If you blank it out then the From field in headers is set to username@protonmail.com instead of simply username@protonmail.com.

    If you don’t have a display name set, the address you have is used as a display name.

    Duh, I thought the multiple email addresses were for different people. Now I bought and created 15 addresses and set up different display names but I just realized from reading this that they will all go to the same mailbox! What;s the use of having so many aliases? Is there a way to at least forward their mails to their other email accounts? When will you have the feature to create different mailboxes with the same domain name?

    We are working on adding sub users, but we do not have an exact date for this. There is no auto forwarding option, we will check if this needs to be added in the future.

    I am running the Pro version and cant figure out how to send email using a different sender address in the from field. I must be missing something. There does not seem to be any way to accomplish this using aliases – it only changes the sender name – not the sender address. Is there some way to do this when you only own the secondary email account and not the entire domain? I would like the ability to send email from the protonmail client using a non proton mail account in the “from” field. Any help would be appreciated.

    Is there any way to remove the “” marks from the sender display name ?

    ie. Joe Bloggs sender display name appears as “Joe Bloggs” in my normal outlook account

    Upgrading to ProtonMail plus will allow you to add additional addresses to your main account.

    Where are you with the Address/mailbox issue? I need on domain with 2 to 5 mailboxes, all seperate, with their own logins. Is this done via addresses or users? For example, the PLUS account; 1 user with 5 addresses. Is this one email box with 5 aliases or is it actual 5 mailboxes for 5 different people?

    Sub-users with separate logins are supported on the Visionary and Professional plans. Please note that to create sub-users, you will need to configure a custom domain first and you cannot add ProtonMail domain addresses to sub-users.

    It’s obviously and issue and concern for those that require and use an alias so perhaps you should push a notification to allow a change to be made during the stage of creating an alias and in the mean time, automatically display the alias’s name in the character and size it was typed.

    It defeated the purpose of the alias once I sent a message via an alias which embarrassingly returned back with a reply displaying my original email’s email name (a little play on words there) but seriously fix it soon so other aren’t annoyed and bothered by it as well.

    I am trying to add a user to my protonmail. The trouble I am having is it asking for domain. I understand what domain is and know how to send it to protonmail but it is not working. I also have Proton VPN. I have the emaill address in Proton VPN but trying to add it to Protonmail. user name I wan to add is (hidden) I am professional. I need your help.

    Documentation does not match my settings screen, I have ProtonMail Plus, and am trying to find out how to send from the second address I created. There is no “edit identity” option.

    When I send form the second email address, the display name still shows the first email address.

    How do I send from the second email so the display name matches the email address being used?

    You can edit the display name for each alias address by going to Settings > Name/Signature and clicking on EDIT SIGNATURE for the corresponding address.

    Besides the documentation for creating aliases not matching the settings screen (which I think I managed get through anyway), there must be something else that needs to be done to receive messages. I’m have Bridge installed and working with my main email addresses, but messages sent to the alias have a Decryption error in the because “openpgp: incorrect key”.

    When I added the alias, there was some message that displayed very briefly about doing something else, but it was gone too quickly for me to read what is said and I can find anything about here in the support pages.

    Please help.
