Exporting contacts from other mail providers

You can import contacts from other email services into your ProtonMail account. To do this, they must first be exported from another service as either a CSV or a VCF (vCard) file. In this article, we look at how to export contacts from a number of popular email services.

How to import contacts

Once you have exported your contacts (see below), you can import them to ProtonMail.

1. Log in to mail.protonmail.com and go to ContactsSettings tab → Import contacts.

2. Drag the exported CSV or a VCF file to the Import contacts window or click the Choose a file or drag it here button to select a file using your system’s default file manager. Click Import when you’re ready.

The Apple Mail app exports contacts in a proprietary file format (.abbu), so it is much easier to export contacts using the iCloud web app.

1. Log in to icloud.com/contacts using your Apple ID.

2. Select All ContactsSettings (the gear icon at the bottom left of the screen).

3. Click Select All, then click Export vCard...

Other services

Refer to your email service’s help section for details on how to export your contacts. If you encounter any problems importing your CSV or VCF file into ProtonMail, you may need to edit it in a spreadsheet program.

Long time Linux user and grateful to be here. VERY grateful. Donated but feel too insecure to pay monthly and possibly lose the service if payment is omitted or forgotten. Very respectworthy that you don’t compel new members to provide their own personal mobile phone number for some unknown, nefarious reason. There again, i am very grateful.

When CardDAV support? having email at proton and contacts somewhere else is not good.
It needs to sync with the phone! (with or without encryption)

You mostly create new contacts on the iPhone, so it needs to update @protonmail…

I followed the instructions to convert my gmail contact to csv format , everything looked good till step #7 , I had no ‘save to disk’ option , so I saved to my mac hard drive . If this is right , then what ?

  4. ProtonMail Support

“Save to disk” is the same as saving to the hard drive. Once you have your contacts file, follow the instructions here https://protonmail.com/support/knowledge-base/adding-contacts/ to import it to ProtonMail.

Your email service appears to be very solid and trustworthy. Beautiful explained “how-to-do-it” in all categories and a very smooth graphic interface. Nice. The export and import of my email contacts worked in all formats (CSV and VCF). I will test you as a provider and listen and read what other users have to tell.
All the best and thank you to all your efforts and ideas. Great work!

I am trying to export my contact list from YahooMail. I converted to a CSV file, but when I click to export CSV, I get an error box telling me that this file does not have an app, and that I must create one. I do not know how to do that.

Please disregard my request for help. I figured it out.
