How can I increase my storage space?

All ProtonMail accounts start on the Free plan by default. This plan provides email accounts with 500 MB of encrypted storage. Unlike other free email services, ProtonMail does not harvest user data to generate revenue by showing advertisements. Instead, we offer premium plans, which provide additional features, including increased storage capacity.

You can find your existing storage allotment along with your current storage usage in the lower left corner of your Mailbox while logged in at or in your Settings in the iOS and Android apps.

ProtonMail offers three premium plans: Plus, Professional, and Visionary. This article focuses on storage allocation among each of these plans. To read a full description of each of the plans, see our article on paid plans.

ProtonMail Plus

With ProtonMail Plus, you will receive 5 GB of storage. You can increase this amount by selecting the drop down and selecting the desired storage amount. As you change the storage capacity, you will see the pricing change to reflect the increased/decreased storage capacity.

ProtonMail Professional

ProtonMail Professional is designed for organizations and gives administrators the ability to allocate different amounts of storage among their sub-users. Professional plans provide 5 GB of storage per user. For example, if there are five people in your company, you will receive 25 GB of storage. You could then distribute 1 GB each to three of the employees and 11 GB each to the other two. Learn more about ProtonMail Professional plans here.

ProtonMail Visionary

The ProtonMail Visionary plan offers 20 GB of storage. (If you require more than 20 GB of storage, please contact us.)

Pricing option as it stands on 03/17/16 does not indicate if storage capacity drops down is global or per user.

  4. ProtonMail Support

We do not support sub users for now. The storage is for the account itself, which includes the aliases/custom domain addresses you add.

Is there any chance to increase the storage upgrade from this “” to 2GB or 3GB?

  14. ProtonMail Support

What is the max storage limit? I currently have 23GB stored with my current provider (rackspace) but am almost out of space. I probably need 35-50GB to keep me going for another 2 years.

  16. ProtonMail Support

Currently, the max is 20G, but we will probably raise this limit in the near future.

  17. Mark

In a review of various e-mail service providers, it was mentioned that messages sent all expire after 28 days (if a shorter time is not selected). Please clarify whether or not this is true; and if true, is there a way to archive messages?

  18. ProtonMail Support

Only encrypted messages sent to outside users have a default expiration time of 28 days (or less if selected). This applies to the link that takes the recipient to the encrypted message, not to the message in the ProtonMail user’s Sent folder.

I´m from Brazil. Is there any chance of billing in brazilian Reais (R$) in the near future?

  20. Maarten

Is the 20GB available for each account, or do all 5 accounts have to share this capacity?

  21. ProtonMail Support

The 20GB storage is shared among all users on the Visionary plan. The Administrator can allocate different storage quotas to all users if necessary.

I really dislike this whole subscription circus. What happens if i have 20gb in my inbox and credit card is canceled? maybe I lost my job and cant pay for a year. what it something else that requires active subscription breaks because I cant pay? what if I have 5000 mails sorted with folders and labels and then I can’t pay for a time, with i have to resort everything after I can pay again? so many questions to your model and I don’t see anything to make me want to risk it.

Personally I like to buy, one time purchase, then it’s “mine” and I dont run into trouble down the road because of something. Why cant I just give you 20€ and then my account have 3 or 5gb space permanently? or 10€ and then I can make 50 folders and labels? Why do you insist I must keep paying to have those tiny “upgrades” ? it just bugs me and I’m not buying into this subscription circus so my money stays in my pocket.

  23. Javier de la Mano

In the Visionary plan, is 20GB storage for sharing with the 6 accounts permitted or 20GB per user?

  24. ProtonMail Support

The 20GB storage is shared between all users. The Administrator can allocate different storage quotas to all users if necessary.

  25. Robert

How do I find my current storage usage? The instructions say, “In the lower left hand corner of your account, you can find your existing storage allotment along with your current storage usage.” Where is this? I can’t find this anywhere I look. I don’t know how to find the “lower left hand of my account.”

  26. ProtonMail Support

When you’re in your Inbox, your storage is shown at the bottom of the navigation menu on the left side of the screen.

Are there any plans to provide a cloud storage service? I would love to use the 5 GB to store photos and files.

  43. ProtonMail Support

We do plan offering something like this in the future.

  44. Jereme

It would be really nice if there was the option to purchase a local storage feature. So we could use proton mail, but use our own hard drives/servers for long term data storage.
That way we could do a one time purchase of a feature, but you guys would not have to maintain storage forever due to a one time purchase.

  45. Steeve

HOW TO FREE UP STORAGE SPACE like as in clear out old to make space for new, instead of having to buy more?

  46. ProtonMail Support

Make sure to clear out the Trash folder once you delete messages from the Inbox. Clear your Spam folder as well.
Be advised that messages deleted from Trash and Spam cannot be recovered.
