Notification emails

Do you have multiple email addresses? The notification emails can be set in the Settings page in your inbox to help ensure you stay up to date with your ProtonMail inbox.

Notifications behave exactly as one would expect, it sends a notification email to the listed email to inform you when there are new messages in your ProtonMail account.

ProtonMail’s notification email system is intelligent and will not spam you with notifications. Notifications are only sent if

1.  It has been 24 hours since you last logged into your account.*

2.  There are new messages in your account (messages that have already been read once but are then marked as unread do not count).

3.  Notifications are only sent once per day at maximum.

* If you access your ProtonMail account then leave (by signing out, closing the browser, and etc), the 24 hour waiting period will be reset and any new incoming email should trigger a notification within an hour or two.

Currently, we do not allow a notification for each new email due to the increased load and possibility of spam.

Data Privacy

While notifications are enabled, we do know what your notification email is and if issued an enforceable Swiss court order asking us to turn over your notification email, we will have to turn over your notification email. Notification emails are permanently deleted from our system if you delete the notification email in the Settings page.

    I am trying to amend my notification emails but when I go to settings, it looks nothing like your screengrab above. Is this article out of date?

    We have updated the screenshot to resemble the latest version. You can do this in Settings>Account.

    I disabled email notifications. In the iOS mobile app there is text in the first field beneath the notifications toggle. The second field,” login password,” is empty. If I try to delete or change the first field’s contents or enter any changes in either field I get an invalid input error and nothing changes. This behavior occurs whether I enable or disable notifications.

    I disabled email notification, but I still receive daily notification on my main email adress. How can I stop receiving notification? Is it a bug?
