Password Managers

Password managers greatly improve your online security by allowing you to create a different password for every individual account you have on the internet. This ensures that if any one password is ever compromised, all your other accounts will remain secure.

Additinonally, password managers allow you to create complex (and thus secure) passwords that humans would find very hard to remember.

ProtonMail strongly recommends using a password manager, and we have tested several popular password managers to ensure they work smoothly with our service.

Please leave a comment below to request guides for additional password managers.

Maybe you ProtonMail could start “ProtonPassword Manager” that would be cool and secure and awesome and I’d be willing to pay $35.00 a year perhaps with a mail account also!.

While you’re at it, if you could add support for the Apple Keychain, that’d cover you for both MacOS *and* iOS. Twofer! Plus the number of endusers is pretty vast.

Thanks for providing such an interesting service. You folks are amazing!

How do I change/update the stored “login” password. UGH! For that matter, how do I change/update either the login or mail password. THIS IS SUCH A inferior UI. My God, it’s 2018 PRotonmail, get “with it”. The UI is horrible. No, terrible. No, amateurish!

I still can’t login to my account after all even with my unchanged password. You just need to simplify your password changing method and do away with unnecessary and complicated bureaucracy to change a common password.

Please consider adding support and integration for RoboForm. It is most popular password management software in the U.S.. I currently use it with Proton Mail just fine, but tighter coupling would be handy.

LastPass and using the domain variant as username is causing troubles. It seems the verification emails sent from LastPass to the address never arrive. This also effectively hinders me from adding family members to the family subscription, and makes it impossible to change the domain to the normal

This page is outdated as it refers to the old two password mode. Most password managers should have no problem with the one password mode.

Norton Password Manager works. I cannot find any articles regarding the use of a hardware key, such as YubiKey. I would very much like to see you utilze the Trusted Platform Module ( TPM, also known as ISO/IEC 11889) to hold the encryption key [so that it would be invisible to the user while also not in your possession], but if you cannot, a USB hardware key (such as YubiKey) to both login AND manage the private decryption key [the common usage is for logging in, so don’t lose that; I’m suggesting an additional usage as the decryption key].

Trusted Platform Module (TPM) technology is designed to provide hardware-based, security-related functions. A TPM chip is a secure crypto-processor that is designed to carry out cryptographic operations. The chip includes multiple physical security mechanisms to make it tamper resistant, and malicious software is unable to tamper with the security functions of the TPM. One of the key advantages of using TPM technology is that you can generate, store, and limit the use of cryptographic keys.

KeePassXC with KeePassXC-Browser also works flawlessly, even with 2FA or mailbox password.
