ProtonDrive early access FAQ

ProtonDrive, our end-to-end encrypted cloud storage service, has entered beta. To thank the paid users who enable us to pursue our mission of building an internet that puts users first, we are giving early access to Proton users with:

  • Lifetime plans
  • Visionary plans
  • ProtonMail Professional with ProtonVPN Plus bundles
  • Both ProtonMail Plus and ProtonVPN Plus plans with a two-year billing cycle

If you are currently subscribed to one of these plans

You do not need to take any action. We will send you an email alerting you that you have received access to the ProtonDrive beta.

Because we need to monitor the impact of ProtonDrive on our infrastructure, we are rolling out early access in batches. If you are a user with a Visionary plan, a ProtonMail Professional with ProtonVPN Plus bundle, or a Plus plan bundle and you don’t already have access, access will become available in the coming days. Thank you for your patience. We will provide updates as the rollout continues.

If you are not currently subscribed to one of these plans

If you are not subscribed to any of the plans mentioned above but still want to get early access to ProtonDrive, you can subscribe or upgrade to a ProtonMail Visionary plan or a Plus plan bundle. This will automatically give you access to the ProtonDrive beta.

Where can I find ProtonDrive?

You can go to drive.protonmail.com and sign in using your ProtonMail login credentials.
You can also log in to your account at beta.protonmail.com and check the app drop-down menu. If you have access, you will see the ProtonDrive icon.

If it doesn’t appear for you and you are an eligible user, please check back in a day or two (be sure to refresh the page) since we are doing a staged rollout.

Does early access to ProtonDrive come right away?

If you are a new subscriber or just upgraded your plan to a Plus plan bundle, you will immediately get access to the ProtonDrive beta. Check your inbox. You should have received an email with a link to take you to ProtonDrive.
We are currently rolling out access to users with existing Visionary and Plus plan bundles in batches. Thank you for your patience.

When does this promotion end?

As long you subscribe or upgrade to a Plus plan bundle before Dec. 15, you will get early access to ProtonDrive.

What is included in a Plus plan bundle?

A Plus plan bundle gives you access to both ProtonMail Plus and ProtonVPN Plus at one discounted price. In addition to early access to ProtonDrive, a Plus plan bundle gives you access to premium features for both ProtonMail and ProtonVPN.

The offer says “free” early access to ProtonDrive. What will the actual price for ProtonDrive be?

Because we are still adding features, the ProtonDrive beta will be free to all users who get early access. It will not affect the standard Visionary or Bundle plan pricing.
We have not announced what the price for ProtonDrive will be once it is complete and released publicly.

How much storage is included with the ProtonDrive beta?

ProtonDrive will share storage with your ProtonMail account. Plus bundle users receive 5 GB of storage, and Visionary users receive 20 GB. You can also add extra storage to your plan.
We will increase these storage quotas before ProtonDrive is released publicly.

I still have time left on my current Proton subscription. If I upgrade, will I lose the money I already paid for my current plan?

No, you will not lose the money you paid for your current plan if you upgrade. If you are already a paying ProtonMail or ProtonVPN user and you take advantage of this promotion, the new plan you select will replace your existing plan. However, when you go to check out, we will automatically credit you the unused balance of your existing subscription. This is added as a proration credit.

I subscribed to a new Plus plan bundle, but I did not see ProtonDrive mentioned on the checkout screen. Do I still get access to the beta?

Yes. ProtonDrive will not be mentioned in the signup process. However, once you subscribe to a Plus plan bundle, you will receive an email containing a link to the ProtonDrive beta.

I keep seeing the pop-up window announcing the ProtonDrive beta promotion. How can I get it to stop?

This usually means that your cookie cache has been cleared. There are three solutions:
– Don’t use browsers that clear your cookies after each session.
– Don’t use Incognito Mode or Private Mode windows.
– Keep the tab with your current ProtonMail session open.

I accidentally closed the pop-up window announcing the ProtonDrive beta promotion. How can I see the deal again?

The quickest way to see the pop-up again is to log in to your account at beta.protonmail.com using an Incognito Mode or Private Mode window.
You can also get the deal by manually upgrading your plan. Log in to your account at account.protonmail.com → Click Subscription → Click Manage Subscriptions.

Will ProtonMail or ProtonVPN-only users be able to get early access to ProtonDrive?

For the ProtonDrive beta, we’re giving early access to users who have Visionary plans, ProtonMail Professional with ProtonVPN Plus bundles, and Plus plan bundles. As we don’t currently know how this will impact our infrastructure, early access is being rolled out in batches, and only to the users with these plans for now. We will provide additional updates as the rollout continues (e.g., if we will include additional plans).
