Using 1Password with ProtonMail

1Password is a paid-for password manager service that offers a closed-source hosted (non-E2EE) password solution. In this guide, we provide step-by-step instructions for using 1Password to log in to your ProtonMail account.

Desktop

1Password offers apps for Windows, macOS, and Linux (DEB and RPM). However, the only way to autofill passwords in a desktop browser is using the Chrome browser extension.

1. Install the Chrome browser extension and sign in to 1Password.

2. Visit account.protonmail.com and enter your ProtonMail login details. A pop-up notice will appear, asking if you want to save the password in your 1Password vault, Click Save in 1Password to continue.

I simply add another password field in 1Password labeled Mailbox Password. You can either copy/paste from 1Password or hover over the protonmail password in the web shortcut and choose the Mailbox Password – very simple.

Since the login page and master password page have a different url you can memorise both and choose the right entry when required. 1password will fill in the fields at your will.
