How to check your Android OS version

Please also see How to check your iOS version.

This article will show you how to see which version of the Android operating system (OS) your Android device is running. This is useful for checking compatibility with Android apps (including the ProtonVPN app for Android) and for ensuring your system is as up-to-date as possible.

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Near the bottom, tap System -> Advanced -> System update.
  3. See your “Android version”.

You can also update to the latest version of Android supported by your device from the same screen.

Please note that, although usually similar, the details of how to update your device can vary depending on which version of Android you are running and what modifications your device’s manufacturer has made to the OS.

On a Samsung One UI device, for example, the instructions are as follows:

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Near the bottom, tap About phone -> Software information.
  3. See your “Android version”.

To update to the latest version of Android supported by your Samsung One UI device, head to Settings -> Software Update -> Download and install.

If you are having trouble locating the version number, try using the Settings Search function to find “version” or “about”.
