What is a Catch-All email address?

A Catch-all email address provides ProtonMail custom domain users the option to receive all mail sent to their domain, even if they are sent to an email address that has not been set up for their domain. It is a feature currently only available for Visionary and Professional ProtonMail account holders.

If you don’t have a Catch-all address enabled and a sender tries to send a message to an incorrect address, they will receive a bounce-back message informing them that the address they tried sending to does not exist within your domain.

Your message wasn't delivered to wrongaddress@yourdomain.com because the address couldn't be found. Check for typos or unnecessary spaces and try again.

How to enable a Catch-all email address

1. Ensure you have completed all of the steps to set up your custom domain and addresses.

2. Go to SettingsProtonMailIdentity & addresses to see a list of all addresses associated with your ProtonMail account.

3. To enable Catch-all, go to SettingsProtonMailDomain Names. In the dropdown Actions menu, select Set catch-all and you will be asked to input an email address belonging to your domain.

All mail sent to your domain that does not match an address in your account will now be delivered to this address.

How specify a Catch-all email address
Tip: To prevent Catch-all email messages from cluttering up your Inbox, we recommend creating a dedicated address within your domain to deliver all Catch-all email messages to (for example, catchall@example.com or contact@example.com).

Is there any possibility of this becoming a Plus feature? If not, a add-on for the Plus plan? I want the catchall, but I can only afford the Plus plan. Thank you!

100% agree. Most comparable mail services have a catch-all (at least through some custom filter configurations) in the price range of the Plus plan. This is the only feature lacking from Plus that is holding me back from migrating to ProtonMail.

I’m also looking for a mail hosting service for my personal email, but I’ve been using a catch-all address for years and can’t switch to protonmail if it won’t support that! I use a different email address each time I sign up for an online service, so I get contacted at lots of different addresses.

I don’t need any of the other Visionary features, so from my perspective you charge a reasonable 4€ per month for basic service, plus an additional, absurd 20€ just to use a catch-all address! Please make this feature available to us mere mortals!

  4. ProtonMail Support

The Catch-all feature is also available with the Professional plan, which will cost less than Visionary if you only need one mailbox.

  5. Rodrigo

Same here, Ryan. This feature should be an add on to the Plus plan.

I someone sends me an email to a non-existing address and it is deliverd to my catch-all address/account, will I be able to reply from the same address that the mail was send to? For example:

    1. I have a custom email like john@example.com
    2. I have catch all set up to deliver anything to john@example.com
    3. Someone sends me a mail to john.appleseed@example.com

When I reply to that email, from which address will my message be sent from?

  7. ProtonMail Support

The reply will come from the catch-all address, as the email address the message was sent to doesn’t exist in ProtonMail.

Here is another vote for enabling catch-all on the plus plan.

Can a catch-all message to go multiple mailboxes so that two people can monitor the messages?

  10. ProtonMail Support

No, an email address can’t be shared between multiple mailboxes. For now, you can set up a new mailbox and share the login credentials if multiple people need to access the address.

  11. Ben Peterson

this used to be included with plus :P

  12. ProtonMail Support

The Catch-All feature was added when the Visionary plan was released. It has never been available in the Plus plan.

  13. Jay

Can I blacklist addresses from the catch all?

  14. ProtonMail Support

You can do this using a custom filter. Please contact our support team for further assistance: https://protonmail.com/support-form.

Would really love the catch-all on plus plan. Either included as a feature or an add-on feature which you would pay a slight additional fee for. A comment on this by ProtonMail Support would be appreciated.

If I add a Catch All email address, can I then filter incoming emails to different folders based on the “TO” address? Basically have unlimited email aliases that I can use and also sort. This is as long as I don’t want to “Reply” using those same addresses. I understand that the reply function works only for the catchall email address.

  17. ProtonMail Support

Yes, you can set up filters based on the To address.

Another vote for Catch-All’s to be added to Plus plan. Please! I’ve run Sendmail and Postfix for almost 2 decades and cannot migrate to ProtonMail exclusively unless this feature is added for a normal user’s paid account. I dont require Visionary or Professional services for something a $3 VPS running OpenBSD can provide.

  19. Wayne Blacklock

Just migrated to Proton Mail, realised I no longer have a catch all and missing mails. My fault but it’s such a small thing that would deliver significant value, especially during a transition to Proton. I’d pay a little more for it on Plus.

  20. ProtonMail Support

At the moment, Catch-All is only available on the Professional and Visionary plans. Thank you for the suggestion.

  21. Kathryn

Please add catch-all to Plus for a reasonable charge. The jump in price from Plus to Professional is way too much to just get this one feature.

  22. Chris Arnold

It’s amazing how cheap people are, asking it to be added to the $48/yr plan (which is 50% off for almost a month every year). Did it occur to anyone that ProtonMail may have actually done a cost analysis, and in some crazy scheme to turn a profit and remain in business, they WANT it to be a premium feature?

You want to pay the bare minimum and keep hosting your own email, go for the cheap VPS option and save tens of dollars per year. I personally have been running a catch all on ProtonMail for years without a single issue, and in that time they continue to introduce new features (contacts, bridge, cal eventually, etc). You get what you pay for in this world. You want a feature packed free platform, check out Gmail. It’s sounds like a great fit for your budget.

  23. Dorian (Plus Member)

Agree with all the other commenters the price increase from plus to professional is just way too high for that one feature. As a paying customer I don’t think this is something that should be omitted. Other email providers offer this as part of their basic plan which is already much cheaper than plus. Please add this important anti-spam measure to Plus paying customers.
