ProtonMail makes it possible to delete your account entirely. Once your account is deleted, there is no way to recover it. We do not recycle usernames, which means the same username will not be available in the future.
If you wish to combine multiple ProtonMail accounts, please click here.
Please note that you cannot delete your account with the intention of switching to a different domain (@protonmail.com or @protonmail.ch). Once an account is created, the domain cannot be changed. You can have multiple domains if you upgrade to a premium plan.
1. Log in to your account at mail.protonmail.com and go to Settings → Go to settings → Account→ Account and password → Delete account and click the Delete your account button.
2. Please provide a reason why you’re leaving us and confirm your ProitonMail username and password as a security precaution. If you have two-factor authetication enabled on your account, you will also need to enter a 2FA code.
Confirm that you want your account to be permanently deleted by clicking Delete. Keep in mind that you will lose access to all Proton apps, including ProtonVPN, Proton Drive, and Proton Calendar.
To make it clear, when you say “same username will be not available in the future” does thhat mean for example if my username is knowledge@protonmail.com and I delete my account, does that mean that that username will never be able to be use?
0
Hi Karthik,
That is correct. Once your account is deleted, you will not be able to request the same username.
0
Not Interested.

“We do not recycle usernames, which means the same username will be not available in the future.”
Why? For what?
0
Deleted usernames are not available in the future for security reasons. Users identity can be easily stolen and exploited if we recycle usernames.

In the case I want to change from .com to .ch i can’t use the same username then?
Thanks

Unfortunately, once you create your account with .com you can not switch it to .ch,and vice versa.
You can upgrade your account to Premium and own both of the domains.
We have made some changes for the new users. When you create a new account, you can choose which domain you want to use, .com or .ch. Once the account is created you can only use the chosen domain. You can use both domains if you upgrade to a premium pan, but your default domain will always be the one you have registered, and if you go back to a free plan, only that domain will be available.

Prontomail is crap!!
I should be allowed to DELETE MY ACCOUNT without having to go around in circles!!
I entered my password to login to my account and it was fine, but I am unable to delete my account even though I used the same password. I want to know why I’m prevented from deleting my account.
Notify me of deletion of my account on the email address below.
Thanks.

This is a security precaution, to prevent another person deleting your account if you happen to leave your email open on a public machine.

If I delete my account, does that free up the phone number associated with it?
Reason being i chose a rather unorthodox address and need a more business friendly one.
0
The phone numbers used for SMS verification aren’t associated with any accounts, it you delete your account, that phone number cannot be used again. Please contact our Support team using the support form at https://protonmail.com/support-form, via the report bug button or at contact@protonmail.ch and support@protonmail.ch, for help setting up a new account.

Hello,
In the extreme event that the US decides to shudown @protonmail.com domain (which even if it should not happen, it does can), what would happen to users who have used that domain to register their accounts? How would they access their accounts? Where is the encrypted information (emails, contacts) stores?
The fact that we cannot deleted and create a new account with the same username under .ch, or just switch from one to the other does not make it feel very US-safe.
0
In the highly unlikely event that this happens, we will make sure that our users are not left locked out of their accounts. All data is stored on our servers in Switzerland, so all existing data will be safe.

I accidentally copy/pasted my recovery e-mail address over the clipboard with my 99-character generated password in it. Now I can’t delete the account, can’t log back in–the very perfect address is essentially destroyed. I can’t change the periods in it to underscores either, so a whole family of perfect addresses is destroyed. Is there ANY way to request it be admin-destroyed? Does it ever time out?

Hi. If I delete my account, do you backup the data in your servers or is my account and all data associated with it deleted within the following timeframe?
0
When you delete an account and the deletion is finalized, no data is retained.
0
Guys, can you please update your delete account warning to warn that you woundn’t be able to recreate it again. I’ve just wanted to reset my account and start from scratch after some tests with tit and deleted it never realizing that I wouldn’t be able to recreate it again. That’s a critical piece of information missing from that warning and would save your users a lot of trouble!

If I don’t use my free account, how long before it is automatically deleted?
0
Although it is not the current practice, we reserve the right to suspend or delete accounts that are inactive for over three months. Paid accounts with active paid status are not subject to this measure.

I lost my password. I understood that it was not possible to recover it. The box being empty because it is unused for the moment, I would like to destroy it and recreate it with the same name. Indeed I had business cards printed with this address….
Is there any way to do that?
