How to delete your account

If you want to permanently delete your account, please follow the steps below.

Please note that once your account is deleted, there is no way to recover or recreate it. We do not recycle usernames, which means the same username will be not available in the future.
If you want to delete your account and recreate it on your premium account, please click here.

Warning: you cannot delete your username in order to recreate it with different domain (@protonmail.com or @protonmail.ch). Once an account is created, the domain cannot be changed. If you upgrade to premium plan, you can create the other domain as an alias.

1. Log in to your account and navigate to Settings.

2. On the Account tab scroll down and click on the “Delete your account” button.

3. Once you click delete your account enter your Login password in the pop-up window and the account will be deleted. Please leave us feedback in the same window to help us improve our service.

    To make it clear, when you say “same username will be not available in the future” does thhat mean for example if my username is knowledge@protonmail.com and I delete my account, does that mean that that username will never be able to be use?

    That is correct. Once your account is deleted, you will not be able to request the same username.

    Deleted usernames are not available in the future for security reasons. Users identity can be easily stolen and exploited if we recycle usernames.

    To delete your account, please navigate to Settings -> Account -> Delete account.

    You need to log in on mail.protonmail.com, navigate to Settings>Account and delete your account from there.

    Unfortunately, once you create your account with .com you can not switch it to .ch,and vice versa.

    You can upgrade your account to Premium and own both of the domains.

    We have made some changes for the new users. When you create a new account, you can choose which domain you want to use, .com or .ch. Once the account is created you can only use the chosen domain. You can use both domains if you upgrade to a premium pan, but your default domain will always be the one you have registered, and if you go back to a free plan, only that domain will be available.

    I requested my “free” email account at Proton to be deleted. I tried logging back in to ensure that it was deleted, whilst I was unable to log in, a prompt appeared stating that my “account was scheduled for deletion”, how long does the deletion process take?
