ProtonMail Plans Explained (Free, Paid, Professional, Visionary)

ProtonMail offers plans suitable for everyone, from the occasional user concerned about privacy to the busy professional who demands the highest levels of security and reliability. Below, we explain the plans we currently offer.

To thank our paid users, we offer free Storage Bonuses of 1 GB additional storage per year of paid membership.  However, there will always be a Free ProtonMail plan. We support this Free plan through paid plans.

You can upgrade or downgrade your account at any time from within the web app. To do this, go to SettingsDashboard and choose a plan.

Please note that when you change your plan, all changes become active immediately. This means if you downgrade your account, you will immediately lose access to all premium features that came with your old plan.

Please see How to upgrade or downgrade your ProtonMail subscription for more information on this subject.

ProtonMail Free

We created ProtonMail to bring encrypted email to everyone around the world. What about the attachment limit for the paid account? Will it be higher than 15-20 mb? If it will go at least till 50 mb, I will buy an account right now :).

  2. ProtonMail Support

The attachment size for now is 25 MB and is the same for all users. We will consider changing this in the future.

  3. angelico

I would have Protonmail as my unique email, but during the necessary time of transition from Gmail I’ll use the free plan of protonmail. If the free plan had at least 1 Gb of storaging, this would facilitate us to import the principal core of the multi-year archive of the old gmail account.
    Thank You!

    Hello ProtonMail Person/s

First let me tell you how much gratefull I am for your service. VERY!!!.

I am subject to a constant attack from an hacker on the cell phone and internet.

Your service is really helping here.

I would like to suggest that you add a VPN service to the e mail so the safty will be “perfect”.

I was trying to use few VPN services and all were untrusted. The VPN were disconnect itself or verefiy that it is working were in fact it was not.

I think that with your background and brad name you put for ProtonMail a paid VPN for paid customers only will be in a high demand.

I am a relatively new & therefore a “green” user.
I have trouble putting images within text of emails. How do I adjust image sizing so as they are not wider than normal page width of the text?
I do understand that drag & drop from my i Photo folder but there is virtually always a pop-up window saying “Unresponsive script” while attempting to drop the image into an txt area of an new email.
I don’t have problems when using other email systems hence, I am thinking that its something to do with my ProtonMail settings.
    I open ProtonMail through Tor
    Use Apples 10.6.8

Also, I cant open photographs that come to me from a Windows 10 Mail system.
I have spent about 2 hrs searching for answers.
If you can afford the time, it would be appreciated.
    Thanks for you work.

  34. ProtonMail Support

You need to add images in the body of the message with the “Insert Image” button in the composer. For now you can load images only from URL. We are working on improving this, if you use drag and drop the image should be added as an attachment. You can read more about this here If you need assistance please contact us on or via the Report bug button.

Hi!!!!! I can not do an email list in my free ProtonMail account, can i do that in the ProtonMail Plus paid account?????

  40. ProtonMail Support

Thank you for your suggestion. We are looking closely to every suggestion our customers are reporting and try to implement it in the future updates to make ProtonMail more user-friendly.

  41. AK

Any news on the Business and Enterprise plan?

  42. AK

Do you have an ETA for the Business and Enterprise service?

  43. A3

Maybe 48€ isn’t too much to Switzerland, but it is in other countries.

I have a free account right now, and I could be paying about 10€ for a more basic account, maybe 1Gb, 2 Addresses, 200 emails/day, 30 Labels, or something like that.

I guess they focused their business strategy in less people paying more, because not much people value their privacy.

  44. Valdo

I too think an additional “entry-level” paid plan would be beneficial, both for users (who want to support ProtonMail but can’t spend too much money) and for ProtonMail (to earn a bit more money).
A paid-plan at 1 €/month (2 € max!) for 1 GB storage, 2 addresses, 300 messages/day, 40 labels would sound fair to me. I believe there is an audience for such a paid plan (I hope I’m not wrong; the fact is I would have been interested personally).
Side note: I’m willing to go for a paid plan, that is 5 GB storage today, the thing is I don’t need that much storage, at least today since my mailbox is pretty recent. I don’t know how ProtonMail manages users storage (is it pre-allocated from the start or extended only when necessary – up to the “max. allowed” storage?). I hope it isn’t pre-allocated as it would sound like “wasted storage” to me.

  45. S

My needs fall somewhere between the free plan and the plus plan. Any plans to add something intermediate, say 1GB storage, at a lower price point?

  46. ProtonMail Support

For now we are offering the current Plus and Visionary plans, and we are working on adding a new Business plan. We will consider this in the future.

  47. SergeKirchoff

Hello! I accidentally paid for an annual subscription instead of monthly . How can I get my money back?

  48. ProtonMail Support

You can downgrade to the free plan and contact us on or via the Report bug. We will refund you, and you can change the subscription.

  49. Dillon

Perhaps expand the denominations – 48USD or 48EU is not 48AUD or 48NZD for example. Make payment friendlier globally, and more people would likely subscribe.

  50. R

I tried to upgrade to ‘Visionary’ and whilst making a credit card payment my VPN disconnected. I’m not sure whether the transaction went through or not, is there any way you guys could find out? My email account as not been ungraded yet…

I have to say I love ProtonMail service, but I would like to suggest an intermediate paid plan option between Protonmail Free and ProtonMail Plus. $48 a year is too much for me, but I would gladly pay 20-30 per year for a basic package with let’s say 2GB storage, a few aliases but with no custom domain support. I feel like a lot of people are in the same boat as me, and it could generate more total revenue for this amazing service.

  62. ProtonMail Support

Thank you for your suggestion. We will consider implementing lighter plans in the future.

  63. Dago

I second the suggestion of a lighter plan. I would need a bit more storage (1-2GB) and one alias, nothing more, and paying 48$ for this seems too much.

  64. Inga

I am would like to have 1-2Gb plan too

  65. jaro

Is the way to get custom domain in free plan, or cheaper? Plus plan is too expensive for me, and I don’t need more storage, addresses and labels :)

  66. Katia

    Dear ProtonMail team,
I would also be interested in an intermediate paid plan that would cost less than 48€, with less than 5 GB storage (around 1 or 2 GB would be perfect) and 1 additional alias, for example.
Thank you again for the great work!

  67. Carol

I just paid for an additional 2 years (Black Friday offer) but I still had 10 months left of my subscription. I thought the 2 years would start when my current subscription runs out but it seems that they start today. This means I have lost the money I paid in September and the remaining 9 – 10 months. I would like (a) to be reimbursed or (b) to have my subscription period EXTENDED to cover the months I already paid fror

ALSO this evening I have received 2 weird messages:

You have 1 new message(s) in your inbox and custom folders.

Please log in at to check them.

These notifications can be turned off by logging into your account and disabling the daily notification setting.

    Have a great day,
    The ProtonMail Team

The messages are weird because I am already logged into my account yet they have a link telling me to log in and when I click that link I just get back to my email account with the message again. What are the folders? Why are you sending me these messages?

Not happy at the moment at losing my money and receiving this kind of nonsense.

  68. ProtonMail Support

If you are already on a premium plan, your current subscription is prorated, and you are charged less for the extension. The new plan starts on the date you make the payment and will last for 2 years.
To disable new email notifications, you need to log in to the account where your address has been set as the recovery address and disable “Daily email notifications”.

I have a couple of questions about the Professional plan:
    1. We currently have 12 domains but, as far as I understand, this plan only allows a maximum of 10. Do you confirm?
    2. We have internal mailing lists that may have a maximum of 40-50 email addresses. Are we I able to configure them with this plan?
    3. What is your backup policy? Hourly? Daily? Weekly? What is the retention period?
    4. We currently have around 150 mailboxes. If needed, will we be able to export the content of them all from your servers to one of our file servers?
    5. What is the service availability SLA that you guarantee to your Professional customers?
    6. Does the Professional plan support IMAP, SMTP and POP3 protocols?
    7. If needed, do we have access to the server log (auditing) files if we want to look into all the activities of each of our domains and mailboxes?

    Best Regards

  73. Steve

    Hello ProtonMail team,
I love the service, however I do need to echo the comment of others who would like an intermediate plan between the Free and Plus, somewhere in the middle. I am from Canada, however I cannot justify the $48USD at the moment for what I use it for (bill notifications, mostly). A more entry level plan ($24USD?) perhaps with some limited features, maybe 1GB, several rule filters, would be great. I would love to support the effort, however again, it is a bit too much for me. I would hazard a guess there are many folks in my position..

    Hello support,

I have a family of four members and would like to use a family domain with the ability for each member to have his/her own separate, private account and login credentials. Which plan is best suited for my situation that’s the cheapest in price?

Thank you in advance for your attention.

  95. ProtonMail Support

The best plan for you would be the Visionary plan. The Visionary plan comes with the option to add up to 6 users total and also has ProtonVPN included.

Currently I have a free account; but I’m looking for a plan that would allow three other family members to have their own accounts. While examining the Plus plan, it’s not clear to me whether the “Additional addresses” option would allow family members to have their own accounts (or whether it pertains only to aliases). Thanks.

  101. ProtonMail Support

All additional addresses on the Plus plan are added as aliases. To create sub-users on the same ProtonMail account, you will need either the Professional or the Visionary plan.
Please note that sub-users can only be created with custom domain addresses, it is not possible to create users with ProtonMail addresses. ProtonMail addresses can only be added as additional (alias) addresses to the main ProtonMail user.

Are you still considering creating an intermediary plan between the free and plus plan? I am in the same boat as many other people here, the plus plan is a bit too expensive for me but the free plan is too limited and doesn’t pay your great service ;) I would pay 1€ or 2€/month for filters, some more folders & labels and 1/2Gb storage.

  105. Tom

I consider to update to Visionary Offer.
#1: Are sub-users private or non-private users? Can an admin read the emails of subusers?
#2: Can users have email addresses like and/or

  106. ProtonMail Support

    1. The admin can create sub-users as either private or non-private and can log in to non-private sub-user accounts to read the emails.
    2. No, sub-users can only have custom domain addresses.

  107. Helene

I want to make sure that I correctly understand your pricing.

I own 2 domain names which I use for email (e.g., and It appears that this would mean I need the Professional plan which allows 2 domains.

The price is $75/user/year. Since I own and use both of these domains but with different email names for each, does that mean that name_ABC and name_XYZ count as two users so my annual fee would be $150 or would it be $75?

    Thank you!

  108. ProtonMail Support

That depends if you need separate mailboxes for each domain. If not, you can add the addresses as aliases and go with one user.

  109. Leander

Does the plus plan include multiple addresses using the same domain (e.g., etc.) or is it really limited to exactly one address?

  110. ProtonMail Support

With the Plus plan, you can add additional addresses with the, and domains and, if you add your own domain, addresses from your domain. By default, you can add up to 5 additional addresses. This can be expanded up to 50 addresses.

Hello, I have a charity and would like to know could I set up two free accounts, one for client confidential information and a general account for other correspondence and then when we are much more established could I transfer the information and combine them under something like Mail Plus? currently running out of Gmail and it does not make me feel very easy using it now, as we have grown quite substantially over the year. Also, is it possible to make an account that is domain name based address or is this only available to the plus plan? I would need an general@[hidden].org and a (or to that effect). Thank you for your time.

Custom domain addresses can only be added to paid accounts. Please contact our support team – they will be able to guide you better:

Why does it say that protonmail is free but when you create account you have to choose plus or the more expensive ones?

  114. ProtonMail Support

ProtonMail does offer a Free plan. If you aren’t seeing this option when creating your account, please contact our support team:

I would love if Protonmail would in the future have a paid account cheaper. I live in a third world country and 5 dollars are almost 4 times my currency. So please make a cheaper plan and I would love to upgrade. But right now I can’t afford.

I have the ProtonMail Visionary plan and I am at my limit of adding users. Are there any larger plans with my address space I can add to my account.?

  117. ProtonMail Support

The Visionary plan cannot be edited. For more users, you will need to switch to Professional with the correct number of users selected.

I am wondering what my use case would be, i am a single user with multiple email accounts spread across and my own domain. lets say 10 email accounts? 20 tops:) since i am the only user for these accounts, will i be ok with the $5 a month plan?

  119. ProtonMail Support

The basic Plus plan allows adding up to 5 additional addresses that share the mailbox with the main address. You can add more addresses at an additional cost.

I’m using the basic/free ProtonMail for a few months now, I was about to upgrade to Plus, but something didn’t make sense in pricing. On the app itself the Plus version asks me to pay £54.99 (British pounds) but here above it is priced at 48 American dollars. Based on the currency rates $48 equals £38 ish (slightly plus or minus), a big difference to £54.99, so who is doing what and how can it be explained realistically and logically? I hope this is not a discrimination by country, UK is not that rich as some might think to try and milk them for extra money.

  121. ProtonMail Support

The in-app purchase also includes a 30% fee charged by Apple, as noted on the upgrade page.

I was given a notice when I tried to create a new folder I have reach the limit for a free Protonmail account. Well I have the plus at least that is what I signed up for and was charged to my debit card $53 US on 9-16-2019. What is going on? Robert Mitchell

I have a free account and can find no way to reply to an email that I receive, and no way to print an email that I receive . I need to reply immediately to an email I received yesterday from the US Copyright Office. What a time to discover that I can’t!

I’m considering Proton, but there is no answer for my questions at your site. You also don’t provide a phone contact # for support or questions. I don’t want to get suckered into something I can’t use and have to pay for upgrade.
    1. Do emails stay at your server (accessible) from other devices I use) or are they downloaded to my computer? If stored w/you, is there a way to download important messages to save online space?
    2. 500 mb storage doesn’t sound like much. How can a non-tech person know if that’s enough?
    3. Does the daily message limit count both in- and outgoing msgs; and is each reply in a thread counted separately? What about outgoing to multiple addresses?

  127. ProtonMail Support

    1. Yes, you can access your messages from multiple devices, they are stored on our servers with zero-access encryption. Free users can export messages using the Export option in the web client.

    2. This largely depends on the size of the messages. Most messages are only a few kilobytes in size, so theoretically, you could have thousands of messages before you hit the limit. However, if you have lots of emails with large attachments (25 MB max), in theory, you can fill up 5 GB of storage with ~200 messages.

    3. Daily limits are for sending only, where each recipient address counts as a separate message.

Is there a plan that unlocks basic paid VPN features and IMAP/SMTP support?

  129. Roger

I keep on getting a prompt on over capacity. I have gone through all that I can at present to subtract any messages to accommodate this prompt. What do you recommend I do to comply and stop these prompts? Thank you.

  130. ProtonMail Support

Hi, if you’re over capacity, make sure to also remove the deleted emails from the Trash folder. This will delete the messages permanently and they will no longer count toward your storage quota. If you’re using a Free account, you can also upgrade to a paid plan for more storage capacity.

I was wanting to complete a bridge on my MacBook laptop so I’m able to have my emails on there also. Just wondering which subscription will allow me to do so.
    Thank you

HI – with a paid plan, on the iOS app, can you access all the mail from your additional addresses, or do you have to log in and log out separately of the app for each address?

  136. Jacob

I have an issue, there are “5 addresses” for a Plus plan and only one user. So, my guess is, the “one” user should be admin account?

Ex. Assume I ordered a Plus plan and I have: (1GB), independent access (1GB), independent access (1GB), independent access (1GB), independent access (1GB), independent access

And I can set as a “admin” account?

Cause I’m going to propose email plan to our company, but numbers are confusing. Hope can get this clear…
We have totally 11 users (that’s say, 11 addresses are needed)
So, if we need 1 GB for each address, can we subscribe:
    Plus plan 48.0/yr + (6 x 9=54) add 6 GB + (9 x 2=18) add 10 addresses more = 120 for a year subscription?

  137. ProtonMail Support

The Plus plan only has one mailbox, where all addresses are shared. There are no admins. For a company with multiple mailboxes, you will need the Professional or Visionary plans. For further inquiries, please send an email to

  138. diana

So when you log in on the iOS app to your main mailbox, you will be able to see all the email sent to any one of your 5 addresses, correct? I am considering signing up for a Plus plan, but I can’t seem to find the answer to this question. Someone on the App Store commented about having to sign in and out for each address, but I’m not sure if that’s correct.

  139. ProtonMail Support

On the Plus plan, all your addresses share the same mailbox, so yes, you can see messages for all of them at once.

  140. Clare

Hello, I currently have 2 free accounts. I am going to upgrade to a paid account. When I upgrade from inside one of the accounts, how can I connect the second account to the first? A paid account can have put to 5 email addresses…. AM I understanding this correctly. I looked for an FAQ on this? Is there an FAQ I can follow?

I have a free acount and I am considering getting a Plus account
So assume I upgarded to a Plus account. If I want to switch back to a free account is this possible assuming I am under the 5GB limit?

  144. ProtonMail Support

Yes, this is possible as long as your account is within the limitations of the Free plan.
