ProtonMail Plans

ProtonMail offers plans suitable for everyone, from the occasional user concerned about privacy to the busy professionals who demands the most security and reliability. Below are the plans we currently offer. Keep in mind we will try to raise the limits when resources allow and continue to add more features, some of which will only be available to paid accounts. Basic ProtonMail plans are always free, and we support the free plans through donations and paid plans.

You can upgrade or downgrade your account at any time through the Dashboard within your Settings.

ProtonMail Free

We created ProtonMail to bring encrypted email to everyone around the world. We know that some of the people who need our service the most will not be able to pay, so there will always be a free option. ProtonMail Free accounts enjoy the same level of security and ease-of-use as our premium offerings. The main differences and limitations are listed below.

  • Sending limit: 50 messages/hour and 150 messages/day
  • Labels limit: 20
  • Storage: 500 MB
  • Custom domains: not supported
  • Additional addresses: not supported
  • Customer support: limited
  • Short email domain (@pm.me): receive messages only
  • Pricing: free!

Unlike many Internet companies that depend on invading your privacy to sell advertisements, we wanted to avoid this business model and opt for one that puts the users first while also allowing ProtonMail to be sustainable. ProtonMail is funded by both donations and revenue from paid plans. This funding is used to pay for servers, bandwidth, and pay the full time staff that has been keeping ProtonMail running reliably since 2013. By upgrading to a paid plan, you are supporting our mission of providing easy to use encrypted email to citizens around the world for free.

 

ProtonMail Plus

ProtonMail Plus is our basic paid plan that comes with numerous extra features.

  • Short email domain (@pm.me): send and receive messages

On top of the standard plus plan, you will be able to increase the storage, number of custom domains, or add extra email addresses at low fixed prices.

ProtonMail Professional unlocks ProtonMail to organizations around the world. Secure your communication anywhere you are with ProtonMail’s easy to use web and mobile applications.

ProtonMail Visionary is our top tier individual (and family) plan. It gets its name from a group of crowd-funding contributors who donated a significant amount of funds in 2014 to make ProtonMail possible in the first place. In addition to having access to all the features and highest limits, Visionaries will also get early access to future features and services. We know many Visionaries level users are upgrading just to support us and we thank you for supporting ProtonMail.

    I have a question… In your Plan for the Future, you write: “Any spam sending is a violation of ProtonMail’s Terms and Conditions, making your account subject to review and termination.” Although I totally agree that spam is unacceptable, how would any sent email be subject to review, as you promise all mails are encrypted and you guarantee our privacy? Surely you won’t be able to view the content of any mail then?

    We are not able to view the content of the end-to-end encrypted messages, but if we receive a report about a ProtonMail account that is being used to spam we disable the account. The review we do is from the reports we get from the users.

    To disable an account, we require proof of breaking our Terms of Service, along with message headers to verify that the message has been sent by that ProtonMail account.

    What about the attachment limit for the paid account? Will it be higher than 15-20 mb? If it will go at least till 50 mb, I will buy an account right now :).

    The attachment size for now is 25 MB and is the same for all users. We will consider changing this in the future.

    I would have Protonmail as my unique email, but during the necessary time of transition from Gmail I’ll use the free plan of protonmail. If the free plan had at least 1 Gb of storaging, this would facilitate us to import the principal core of the multi-year archive of the old gmail account.

    Would be great if this FAQ talked about, or had links to, more information about custom domains. I assume that I can bring my own domain and have a ProtonMail-level of security on that domain, but this page doesn’t tell me.

    I’m trying to upgrade to a paid account but I can’t log on while the system insists on changing my username by removing the capital “T” from the beginning and substituting the lowercase “t”. It then tells me my “username or password is invalid”.

    First let me tell you how much gratefull I am for your service. VERY!!!.

    I am subject to a constant attack from an hacker on the cell phone and internet.

    Your service is really helping here.

    I would like to suggest that you add a VPN service to the e mail so the safty will be “perfect”.

    I was trying to use few VPN services and all were untrusted. The VPN were disconnect itself or verefiy that it is working were in fact it was not.

    I think that with your background and brad name you put for ProtonMail a paid VPN for paid customers only will be in a high demand.

    What is a custom domain? What would I do with labels? I recognize and use all other features and am considering upgrading mainly to support your company which I view as a bastion of privacy and decency in this spying corporate world.     It does not explicitly say how many addresses can go in the TO/CC/BCC lists of one email…I tried sending one email with 14 in the TO list and it said I exceeded my limit…? I have a free account to start with.

    I reply to one email I received. Your system accuses me of spamming. My Account Disabled. No info or FAQ regarding Account Disabled. What are procedures to correct issue? Who to Contact?
    Mistakenly thought this ‘secure email’ was safe and best. Now I am locked out and cannot have access to emails.
    Possibly fix your system to allow access to read, yet suspend sending. Complete denial of access is simply wrong.

    I am a relatively new & therefore a “green” user.
    I have trouble putting images within text of emails. How do I adjust image sizing so as they are not wider than normal page width of the text?
    I do understand that drag & drop from my i Photo folder but there is virtually always a pop-up window saying “Unresponsive script” while attempting to drop the image into an txt area of an new email.
    I don’t have problems when using other email systems hence, I am thinking that its something to do with my ProtonMail settings.
    I open ProtonMail through Tor
    Use Apples 10.6.8

    Also, I cant open photographs that come to me from a Windows 10 Mail system.
    I have spent about 2 hrs searching for answers.
    If you can afford the time, it would be appreciated.

    You need to add images in the body of the message with the “Insert Image” button in the composer. For now you can load images only from URL. We are working on improving this, if you use drag and drop the image should be added as an attachment.     Maybe 48€ isn’t too much to Switzerland, but it is in other countries.

    I have a free account right now, and I could be paying about 10€ for a more basic account, maybe 1Gb, 2 Addresses, 200 emails/day, 30 Labels, or something like that.

    I guess they focused their business strategy in less people paying more, because not much people value their privacy.

    I too think an additional “entry-level” paid plan would be beneficial, both for users (who want to support ProtonMail but can’t spend too much money) and for ProtonMail (to earn a bit more money).
    A paid-plan at 1 €/month (2 € max!) for 1 GB storage, 2 addresses, 300 messages/day, 40 labels would sound fair to me. I believe there is an audience for such a paid plan (I hope I’m not wrong; the fact is I would have been interested personally).
    Side note: I’m willing to go for a paid plan, that is 5 GB storage today, the thing is I don’t need that much storage, at least today since my mailbox is pretty recent. I don’t know how ProtonMail manages users storage (is it pre-allocated from the start or extended only when necessary – up to the “max. allowed” storage?). I hope it isn’t pre-allocated as it would sound like “wasted storage” to me.

    I have to say I love ProtonMail service, but I would like to suggest an intermediate paid plan option between Protonmail Free and ProtonMail Plus. $48 a year is too much for me, but I would gladly pay 20-30 per year for a basic package with let’s say 2GB storage, a few aliases but with no custom domain support. I feel like a lot of people are in the same boat as me, and it could generate more total revenue for this amazing service.

I thought the 2 years would start when my current subscription runs out but it seems that they start today. This means I have lost the money I paid in September and the remaining 9 – 10 months.     The messages are weird because I am already logged into my account yet they have a link telling me to log in and when I click that link I just get back to my email account with the message again. What are the folders? Why are you sending me these messages?

    Not happy at the moment at losing my money and receiving this kind of nonsense.

    If you are already on a premium plan, your current subscription is prorated https://protonmail.com/support/knowledge-base/credit-proration/, and you are charged less for the extension. The new plan starts on the date you make the payment and will last for 2 years.
    To disable new email notifications, you need to log in to the account where your address has been set as the recovery address and disable “Daily email notifications”.

    I have a couple of questions about the Professional plan:
    1. We currently have 12 domains but, as far as I understand, this plan only allows a maximum of 10. Do you confirm?
    2. We have internal mailing lists that may have a maximum of 40-50 email addresses. Are we I able to configure them with this plan?
    3. What is your backup policy? Hourly? Daily? Weekly? What is the retention period?
    4. We currently have around 150 mailboxes. If needed, will we be able to export the content of them all from your servers to one of our file servers?
    5. What is the service availability SLA that you guarantee to your Professional customers?
    6. Does the Professional plan support IMAP, SMTP and POP3 protocols?
    7. If needed, do we have access to the server log (auditing) files if we want to look into all the activities of each of our domains and mailboxes?

    Hello ProtonMail team,
    I love the service, however I do need to echo the comment of others who would like an intermediate plan between the Free and Plus, somewhere in the middle. I am from Canada, however I cannot justify the $48USD at the moment for what I use it for (bill notifications, mostly). A more entry level plan ($24USD?) perhaps with some limited features, maybe 1GB, several rule filters, would be great. I would love to support the effort, however again, it is a bit too much for me. I would hazard a guess there are many folks in my position..

    ProtonMail does not have cloud storage that you can use to share files with. You can send your PDF as an attachment to an email, as long as it is up to 25 MB in size.

If my wife also opens a free account, but we later decide to upgrade, can I update my account to a Plus account and then add her email from her free account to my paid Plus account? Or, would she have to create a different email address (different from the one she uses in her free account) to add to my paid Plus account? Hope that makes sense.

    Please note that additional ProtonMail addresses can only be added as aliases within the account and will share the same Mailbox and login credentials as the main account.

I ME FIND IN VENEZUELA AND YOU CAN ALSO GET ACCESS TO A LETTER OF THIS TYPE THAT IS A BIG PROBLEM WITH WHICH THE CONSEQUENCE IS AN OBSTACLE THAT DOES NOT ASSUME A PAYMENT MEANS WITH CREDIT IN PAYPAL THAT DESPITE THE LIMITS. that puts our country is still more profitable.

    Sub-users can only be created with custom domain addresses, it is not possible to create users with ProtonMail addresses. ProtonMail addresses can only be added as additional (alias) addresses to the main ProtonMail user.

    Currently I have a free account; but I’m looking for a plan that would allow three other family members to have their own accounts. While examining the Plus plan, it’s not clear to me whether the “Additional addresses” option would allow family members to have their own accounts (or whether it pertains only to aliases). Thanks.

    All additional addresses on the Plus plan are added as aliases. To create sub-users on the same ProtonMail account, you will need either the Professional or the Visionary plan.
    Please note that sub-users can only be created with custom domain addresses, it is not possible to create users with ProtonMail addresses. ProtonMail addresses can only be added as additional (alias) addresses to the main ProtonMail user.
