Payment Options

ProtonMail offers paid plans for users who wish to support Proton and enjoy additional features, such as increased storage and the ability to use your own custom domain.

When you reach the checkout, you will be asked to select a payment method. We accept payment via:

Credit or debit card

1. This is selected by default. If you have previously registered a card with ProtonMail, it will appear as an option. Select it and skip to step 3. 

If you are new to Proton or want to use a different card, you can register a new one.

2. Enter your card details.

3. Click Pay.

Please be sure to review your payment details prior to selecting Continue. Once you click Continue, your card will be charged the Amount due (Total minus any account credit you have in your account). If the payment succeeds, your account will automatically be upgraded with new premium features and higher storage limits.

Please note that we cannot guarantee that prepaid cards will be accepted for reasons beyond our control.

PayPal

1. Select PayPal and then click Continue.

2. A pop-up window will appear asking you to log in to your PayPal account and set up a billing agreement for recurring payment.

If you prefer to make a one-off payment, select the click here option instead.

Once the payment process is complete, you will be returned to your ProtonMail Inbox with an upgraded account.

Bitcoin

You can use Bitcoin only to upgrade an existing account (not purchase a new account). However, you can use Bitcoin to upgrade a Free plan (sign up for a free account here).

Cash

Please send cash payments to the following address:

We accept cash payments in US Dollars (USD), Euros (EUR), or Swiss Francs (CHF). We do not accept checks, money orders, or other forms of non-cash payments sent by post. When sending a payment by cash, please include your ProtonMail username so that we know which account to credit when the payment arrives. 

We cannot be responsible for lost shipments, so we strongly recommend sending your payment using a service that provides a tracking number so you can track the shipment. It is also helpful to notify us that you are sending us cash in the mail, so we know to expect it.

When we receive the cash payment, we will add the value to your account as account credit that you can use to upgrade your plan. Plan prices are available in your account dashboard

Please note that we cannot process cash payments until the payment arrives at our offices by post. Please also note that cash payments are non-refundable. 

Bank transfer

You can pay by bank transfer using our IBAN number for your preferred currency.

We accept payment in US Dollars (USD), Euros (EUR), or Swiss Francs (CHF). The IBAN number depends on the currency you are using:

Once payment is made, please provide us with the following transfer details so we can verify the payment and credit your account.

  • Name and Last Name shown on the transaction
  • Date of the transaction
  • Amount paid

Plan prices are available in your account dashboard. Please note that we will attempt to issue refunds for bank transfers when requested, but this is not always possible. If you have any additional questions, do not hesitate to contact us.

    I kinda of expected to be able to pay with Bitcoin when knowing you can donate with Bitcoin.
    You could just use BitPay to process payments without problems and lots of people would love it.

    I’m interested in upgrading to a paid account, but I see that right now you’re only accepting what looks like “official” credit card accounts. For example, I tried and it looks like I can’t use a Visa gift card (got a notification that it wasn’t a supported payment method), which is my preferred method for online payments made a little more private.

    Do you have any plans to add support for different payment methods in the near future? Would love to upgrade and show my support, but I’d rather not use “my” credit card.

    Advise ASAP, as I want to upgrade, yet am in no mood
    to voluntarily relinquish / give the Stasi-NSA more.

    Credit Card only? The first thing I would do if I wanted to make a fair bit of money from people who are willing to throw it at me, would be adding as many payment options as possible (maybe some through coupon resellers).

    I have money, I want to pay for this, but I refuse to use these cards. Credit Cards… talking about a privacy nightmare, really. Such a shame.

    How about Paypal’s “pay-from-balance” (not their autobill and not their account type that requires a CC)? I see “donate” allows some form of PayPal payment.

    Lastly, how about snail mail and a USD check?

    instant access donate button does not work (IE11, Windows 8.1).
    When creating new account I choose “instant access+mobile
    and I press buton “donate 39” and the buton gets depressed but nothing else happens. I am not redirected to payment page or nothing. I can still change options for donations etc.. I am stuck at this page totally..

    And you guys are storing all the payment data? How is it secure?
    It says no personal information is required, and it is kinda misleading because you store all the credit card info of premium users including full name and address.

    We do not have an exact date for this. We are looking into options about enabling this in the future. We provide different options for payment if you don’t want to upgrade with a credit card.

    Le problème c’est qu’avec le paiement par CB j’ai chaque mois 2 euros de frais supplémentaire (retrait à l’étranger).

    N’y a t’il pas moyen de payer différemment ? 2 euros donnés chaque mois à la banque … je préfèrerais encore qu’ils vous reviennent.

    Already a subscriber I have wanted to change method of payment to paypal? It is not possible ?

    The problem is that with the credit card payment each month I have 2 euros extra charge (withdrawal abroad).

    Is there no way to pay you differently? 2 euros given every month to the bank … I still prefer that you come back.

    You can change the payment method in Dashboard>Update plan. There you update your current plan, and you can choose a different payment method if you want.

    Payed with a CC for 1year, now I want to remove the card but can’t -“please add another payment method”.
    I may use the service for 1 year after witch maybe I will continue,maybe NOT! (or maybe will pay with bitcoin or something…)

    How can I remove the card from your system?!? – delete the account ?…
    I don’t want my card sitting there for you (or someone hacking you) to be able to get funds out without my knowledge!

    I am trying to upgrade my account but the debit card service is blocking payment. There is enough money in my account and I have no problem using the same card for other online services and products on the web. Apparently there is no PayPal option to use either.

    Do you have any suggestions as to how I can pay for an upgrade? I do not use bitcoin.

    Are you still considering PaySafeCard as payment option, or has a decision been made for/against it? For a privacy-focused e-mail provider, it seems a bit strange not to provide one of the most private and secure payment methods available.
