Upgrading/downgrading your account

ProtonMail offers a variety of different plans.

You can upgrade or downgrade your account at any time. You will receive a prorated price based on the amount of elapsed time the chosen plan was used.

To downgrade your account you will need to ensure any custom domains and addresses are disabled to match the specs of the new plan you are downgrading to. If you fail to do so prior to downgrading your account, you will see the following error message stating “Error: Please disable all ProtonMail aliases and custom domain addresses before downgrading to the free plan.”

You can disable the custom domain and addresses within the Domains and Addresses tab within the Settings. Next to the custom domain you would like to disable you will see a trash can icon to delete the domain.

In the Addresses tab you will see a link to Disable next to the address you would like to disable.

When you disable an email address the address will no longer be able to send/receive mail.

    When can I re-register an email with the deleted accounts name? It says that it is scheduled for deletion

    The deletion of the account is permanent. We do not recycle usernames, which means that once an account is deleted the same username can’t be used again.

    I just realized mine’s is scheduled for deletion. Can it be stopped? Or upgraded? It’s connected to an important account and I didn’t realize I was inactive so long to have it scheduled for deletion.

    Hi

    I want to keep using my remko.rood@protonmail account as private account but want to upgrade so that I can put my business account and domain name with you as well.

    I guess that this is possible?

    Will I be able to download my business account via an app on my cell phone?

    Can I incorporate both my private account and biz account in my Mozilla Thunderbird add on on my desk top? Or should I rather start using another one for that?

    Hi, first of all – kudos for an EXCELLENT e-mail service.
    It has everything I want from an e-mail provider, encyption/descryption – multiple aliases etc.
    I just have one simple question.
    If I register for, and use – the free e-mail option.
    Is there a timelimit before I must upgrade or my account will be blocked or deleted ?

    There is no time limit for the accounts. You can use the free account as long as you want, or you can upgrade if you need more advanced features and options.

    At this moment all your addresses share from the same storage, it does not matter if you receive messages on your default address, alias or custom domain address. Please note that you cannot set up separate logins and mailboxes for the custom domain addresses. We are planning to implement this in the future.

    To downgrade your account to the free plan, you will need to delete some messages in order to lower your storage used to under 500 MB. You could also use the Bridge to transfer messages to another account or to export them to your computer before downgrading.

    Hello, I just upgraded my account to ProtonVPN Plus and payment was accepted. However my storage space has not been upgraded. I also haven’t received any confirmation email. Is it normal?

    Adding a VPN subscription does not increase your storage space in ProtonMail. To get more storage space in your ProtonMail account, you need to add a ProtonMail premium plan.     Can you give more detail regarding the PLUS account.
    It has custom domain support and 1 user – however it comes with 5 email addresses…
    My first question is are the 5 email addresses all on the custom domain? Eg joe.bloggs@custom.com, jane.bloggs@custom.com

    Second question: someone with a Windows PC using Outlook – are there plans to develop a similar tool like the Bridge for Apple Mail?

    The 5 additional alias addresses can be either custom domain or ProtonMail domain addresses.
    Apple Mail is already supported for use with the ProtonMail Bridge.

    Sending a mass email.– I tried to send a mass email to let my friends and relatives know that I changed email addresses, but protonmail said I reached my daily limit after ONLY sending ONE email to ONE person before that and being my FIRST and ONLY email sent besides. So now I am forced to pay $4/month to send mass emails. How do I do that? What steps do I take to pay $4/month? I would gladly like to support the cause of protonmail.     Your ProtonMail username will remain the same, but you can set your new-username@customdomain.com address as the default sending address. To change the default sending address, go to Settings > Account, scroll down to Address Priority and drag the address you want to use as your main address to the top position.

    My account is hacked by a work group. My desk top everything. That’s why I got proton mail. However everyday my password is wrong and alias set up without my knowing. So I am trying to downgrade the plan to eliminate the 45 people sharing three plans that I can’t access. ? This email is tied to all I have left! Help please.

    Hello,
    I am using this account to contact you about my primary email [redacted]@protonmail.com.
    I have purchased your premium service in the past and it has come due but my card was void. I attempted several times to add a card and found out that I had to clear something on the browser just to add a new card to the account. After i added the account I found out you would still not accept the card because it was a debit card that I load. Apparently you call that a prepaid debit card which you do not accept. I attempted to install yet another card and I still cannot add the new card to the account.

    I don’t mind paying you for your service as to this point it has been good and I appreciate the options it has given me. However I am now considering simply just having a free account using the same email so I not longer have these ridiculous issues with simply trying to give you money. It is especially frustrating when I pay almost $300 for a service that gets shut down while during the same period my free service is completely functional. How does that make any sense.

    Please guide me through the process of getting this paid so I can proceed with my life. If you cannot accept a payment from me then perhaps you can reclassify my account as a free account again. If that will not work either I will be looking for another service provider.

    i just upgraded first to Plus then to the Professional Plan. Now i want to create the Users but it keep saying i have to upgrade to the pro or visionary plan to do that.

    Must i just wait some hours until the upgrade ist completed in the background or is there a Problem?

    I had protonmail setup with my Windows Thunderbird and it worked – until the Bridge upgrade to v1.0.4 on 5/19. Now I keep getting “Login Failed – Login to server 127.0.0.1 failed.” “Retry – Enter New Password – Cancel”

    I have verified the bridge password is the same as before, and correct; the Bridge login works with my browser.
    For now I use the browser interface for my protonmail, but I want to get back to using Thunderbird.

    The Free plan comes with 500MB storage space. For additional storage, you can upgrade to one of our paid plans.
