Upgrading/downgrading your account

ProtonMail offers a variety of different plans.

You can upgrade or downgrade your account at any time. You will receive a prorated price based on the amount of elapsed time the chosen plan was used.

To downgrade your account you will need to ensure any custom domains and addresses are disabled to match the specs of the new plan you are downgrading to. If you fail to do so prior to downgrading your account, you will see the following error message stating “Error: Please disable all ProtonMail aliases and custom domain addresses before downgrading to the free plan.”

You can disable the custom domain and addresses within the Domains and Addresses tab within the Settings. Next to the custom domain you would like to disable you will see a trash can icon to delete the domain.

In the Addresses tab you will see a link to Disable next to the address you would like to disable.

When you disable an email address the address will no longer be able to send/receive mail.

    When can I re-register an email with the deleted accounts name? It says that it is scheduled for deletion

    Hi

    I want to keep using my remko.rood@protonmail account as private account but want to upgrade so that I can put my business account and domain name with you as well.

    I guess that this is possible?

    Will I be able to download my business account via an app on my cell phone?

    Can I incorporate both my private account and biz account in my Mozilla Thunderbird add on on my desk top? Or should I rather start using another one for that?

    The deletion of the account is permanent. We do not recycle usernames, which means that once an account is deleted the same username can’t be used again.

    How long before I receive a refund?

    I recently downgraded to basic account – I have not yet received the refund for unused time.

    When you downgrade to the free plan, the extra unused credit is stored on your account for future upgrades. Please contact us on contact@protonmail.ch or via the Report bug button for more information about refunds.

  6. Hi, first of all – kudos for an EXCELLENT e-mail service.
    It has everything I want from an e-mail provider, encyption/descryption – multiple aliases etc.
    I just have one simple question.
    If I register for, and use – the free e-mail option.
    Is there a timelimit before I must upgrade or my account will be blocked or deleted ?

    There is no time limit for the accounts. You can use the free account as long as you want, or you can upgrade if you need more advanced features and options.

    If I upgrade using a domain name, is my current free email considered one of the emails sharing the bigger storage?

    At this moment all your addresses share from the same storage, it does not matter if you receive messages on your default address, alias or custom domain address. Please note that you cannot set up separate logins and mailboxes for the custom domain addresses. We are planning to implement this in the future.
