Setting ProtonMail as the default email handler in your browser

You can set ProtonMail as the default email handler in your browser. This means when you click on a “mailto:” link on a web page, your browser automatically opens the ProtonMail email composer in a new tab.

This article demonstrates how to set ProtonMail as your default email handler on popular browsers.

Firefox

Firefox always asks for your default email handler. However, this setting can be changed.

  1. Open Firefox and click on the hamburger menu (≡) located at the top right. Select Settings
  1. Under Applications, change the mailto setting to Use mail.protonmail.com. ProtonMail is now your default email handler in Firefox.

Note: Accepting ProtonMail as your default mail handler will add ProtonMail to your list of mail handlers. However, if you have more than one mail handler, Firefox will nonetheless prompt you to select a mail handler every time you click on a mailto: link.

Unfortunately, Firefox does not offer a “Do not ask again” option, so you might see this banner more than once. To turn it off completely, enter about:config in your Firefox address bar. Enter network.protocol-handler.external.mailto in the search bar and deactivate the toggle from true to false.

Chrome

  1. When using ProtonMail in Chrome for the first time, an icon will appear in the URL field. Click on the icon.
  1. Select Allow and press Done. ProtonMail is now your default email handler in Chrome.

Opera

  1. When using ProtonMail in Opera for the first time, the browser will automatically prompt you to open email links with ProtonMail.

Brave
